Bloods drops off as Touma dragged Index to Tsukuyomi Komoe the last episode. As Touma wanders the street, blaming himself for being cursed with his right arm, Index struggles for life. The Index’s John’s Pen (index library mode) is still active as she guides Komoe through her healing process.

Consulting the constellations and time Index is able to regenerate her body with Komoe’s help. Komoe watches as Index gets up her feet and draws a magic circle with her own blood on the table. She grabs a pair of dolls, a few books and other stuff and places these on the table. On the end, the table represents the room.

Komoe needs to repeat Index enchants and visualize an angel. At first she fails, but the second time she manages to complete the ritual. Index is healed and the John Pen’s mode wears off.

When Touma returns he finds Index awake and the trouble starts. Obvious Komoe questions about Index and gets furious when Touma lies. Furious Komoe yells she can’t be his sister. She doesn’t even look like a student. The teacher isn’t stupid and just knows Index must be a foreigner and cannot be taken to the hospitals or other facilities.

Though Touma had lied, Komoe understands his motives and she decides to give him another change. While she do some shoppinh he should think up a good/better explanation. Outside Komoe smiles secretly, Touma is such a good boy … Inside Index and Touma starts discussing. They both agree not to involve Komoe deeper. Corncerning about Index’s world, Touma notice he doesn’t know much either. He ask Index to explain and she actually does. Touma listens fatherly to her confession.

Index explains all church divisions believes in the same god, but in an other manner because of politics. An important subject in her explanation is the fact that knowledge can neutralize any magic. Magics are formula’s and when you can reverse engineer the formula you can neutralize or even counter-attack it. Index watches Touma, but he doesn’t show any expression. He takes a blanket and sob it in the water. While Index is being nursed she continues and tells the conclusion.

So if you have knowledge the magic world will collapse. If that would happen the entire world would collapse since there must be balance. Index is involved because of her 103,000 grimmoires she posses. That library has the ability to erase all magic from the world. On the other side all that knowledge can’t be destroyed and thus they sealed them up. Index watches Touma who’s getting more furious by the time. He cannot believe she kept it all in secret.

On the other side of the city Stiyl discusses his defeat with Kanzaki Kaori. He used Innocentius in his last battle (episode 2) but lost against a level 0 esper. Stiyl wonders how it happened. Curious Kanzaki is eager to meet Touma. At that moment Touma had accompanied Index to the bath house. However they ended up in quarrel and he now wanders the streets alone. Suddenly Touma notice all traffic and humans are gone. When he’s able to link the mystery with magic and runes, Kanzaki emerges…

Toaru Majutsu no Index-tan is a mini episode which makes fun of their own series. The mini episode is comparable with the small Shakugan no Shana-tan episode. It has even so much similarities, Index-tan have to mention the their and Shana publishers are the same. Then she starts to jam the head with her feet yelling ’shut up’, which is too much Shana-Tan .  The episode just 8 minutes and is only fun if you have been watching the series.

When Touma reaches the floor of his apartment he finds Index covered in blood. Confused Touma tells her to hold on while he search for clues who ever did this. However the magicians found Touma instead. They tell Index made the mistake to return the his place to get her hood. She probably caught up when Touma wasn’t home, so she only endangered herselves. Mad the magician tells her robe, the walking church, didn’t rendered the magic effective. With this Touma realized he had broken the robe’s magic (in the previous episode).

Times run out and talking is over. The magician, named Stiyl Magnus or Fortis931, just want to recover the 103,000 grimoires and get away. Obvious Touma remain in his way and the magician answers to channel magic and throw a fireball. Unremarkable he finds Touma, alive and unscratched afterwards. Mad he finaly realizes Touma is a kind of match after all. Driven by his superior position Magnus summons ‘Innocentius’. A firelord, cradled with fire and an upper body which is dark as night comes forth. Screaming like a wild beast he spread his claws and slashes to Touma.

The surroundings, like door handle and name plates, melts under the hoods of the firelord. Though Touma simple waves it a way, at least he thought. His right hand do render the fire, but the firelord builds up the lost fire in the same speed as it’s broken down. Suddenly the voice of Index resounds, but she speaks as a pc, as an Index named Necessarius.

Necessarius is the grimoir library, the Index-Librorum-Prohibitorum. The Index narrator informs fighting the Innocentius is ineffective. Instead destroy the magic runes which binds the summoning to the place. When Touma checks his surroundings he spots a million of runes drawn at cards pasted on the roof, wall, door every it can. All cards reveals a magic symbol.

Quickly Magnus steps on the head of Index, bringing her mouth to the floor so she can’t speak. To be sure he throws another fireball to Touma, who uses the smoke to escape. Later on the alarm bell rings and the rainy showers of the sprinkler system falls down. When Touma returns, without Innocentius first, Magnus is amazed. Then Innocentius catches on and he smiles. Overconfidently he laughs, telling the rainy showers isn’t effective on the paper he used. Then he twist his mind, “Kill him!”, he calls.

Touma doesn’t even turn over. His right hand grabs to the Innocent and it renders it to void. Shocked, Magnus, steps back and finds the inkt pouring from the bills. Now it’s Touma’s turn to laugh, paper may hold, but printed ink does not. Then he races forward and smashes Magnus in the face. Knocked out he takes Index to safety as the fire arms finally responds to the alarm bell.

Index wakes up and worries about Touma, who worries about her. She smiles and tells she will be okay if they can stop the bleeding. Touma heart shatters, she must make it. Quickly he ask for an healing spell but Index friendly informs he won’t be able to cast the spell. Even if he would perfect mimic the ritual, his right arm will just dispel it. At top, she informs, any esper can’t use magic. Broken Touma falls on his knees, isn’t there anyway to safe her?

Then he remembers his teacher, who’s not an esper and might be able to make the ritual. He takes the sister (Index) on his back and later on pushing the doorbell. The loli-teacher (I forgot the name), opens the door and Touma pushes herself in. At first the little teacher embarrassed cleans the room of sigarettes and beer cans. Then she sees the sister covered in blood. The moment she’s finaly getting serieus Index body glows up in a cradle of blue light.

Necessarius announces the safety level has been breached and the life Index will perish within 15 minutes GMT. According to Necessarius the teacher may perform a ritual to safe Index. Touma kneels down and asks what help he can do, in respond Necessarius his best option is to be away. His presence alone will merely render all recover magic. Frustrated Touma storms out yelling the teacher she should take care of Index. As he runs away he feels sad and hatred of his cursed right arm. His right arm which renders or dispels any luck, magic or esper powers.

In the first scene we find our hero loosing a mob. Running he screams ’such misfortune!!’. It reminded me a bit of Keichi from “Ah My Goddess!” which had a lot of misfortune himself too. Urm, at any case, the boy, Kamijou Touma, had found these bunch of guys harassing a girl. He attempted to warn to boys to do not provoke hér. Unfortunately they didn’t get his hints, instead they thought he wanted to help her and now picks on him. They are a terrible group after all.

When Touma stumbles upon a bridge he looks over his shoulder but instead of the the pursuers he finds the the girl. Annoyed she asks why as a ‘good’ Samaritan he warned the delinquents. Staring the boy she continues her speech and takes out a coin from her pocket. Overconfidently she rolls it among her fingers. Finding herself superior of her position she explains the term ‘Railgun’, a super electromagnetic cannon. Then she flips the coin and throws it up in the air. Next a lighting strikes just a foot ahead from Touma as a demonstration of it’s destructible force unleashed by the girl.

In fact, Touma knew all along. She’s one of the seven level 5 Espers in the city. He tried to warn the boys, who are, like him a level 0 esper. However Touma suddenly stands up and starts to lecture her. He tells striking smaller levels is a bad habit, which obvious isn’t a welcome lesson to the girl. Furious, the girl channels a lot of power, ignoring Touma’s pleases of a no-no. A pure lighting strike trots towards him like a huge beam. The force builds up and strikes Touma’s hand, which somehow absorbs it. When she realizes it, her rage raises, eluding her mind she strikes again, now at full power.

The next day we find Touma, dripped of sweat performing the house sores. A ‘sudden‘ black out makes it impossible to generate any cooling air. He slides out the door to the balcony of his apartment and finds a girl drooping on his balcony fence. A 11-12 years old child, white dressed as a nun. Surprised she lives and talks he takes her in and get her some food, since she told she was hungry.

Happy she starts eating. Delighted he gave her such a great sour meal, she eats and eats. Actually Touma intention was to push the girl out once she found out he gave her rotten food. Instead this little girl eats herself to death to be polite and accept the hospitable of Touma who made her some food. Obvious Touma regrets and yells she mustn’t eat all. Since she’s too polite he is forced to grab her board and quickly shove it in his own mouth. It makes her sad, but there it ends the discuss.

Later on she eats some biscuits, *cough* left overs, and finally introduces herself as Index and magical name Dedicactus545. Because Touma wondered why she’s named “Index”, she explains she’s the index of the forbidden grimoirs. Therefore she’s being pursued by the Magical Cabal group and has to leave before they find Touma. She is safe, wearing the ‘walking church’ a copy of the ‘Holy Shroud of Turin’.

Touma thinks he’s being fooled, magic and the other weird terms. Annoyed Index grabs a knife and provokes him to stab her. In return Touma informs her, his hand will dispel any esper ability either a miracle of god. Over confident she provokes to touch her robe, if his power is really authentic. Furious Touma stretches his arm and touches her robe to prove.

It takes a while and Index proudly stands firm, until the robe shatters and rips from her body. Confused Touma stares her naked body. The fact the robe reacted means it was an esper powered robe.

When Touma final is able to mumble, Index opens her eyes, inquiring why he suddenly mumbles only to find herself naked.

Whoeha … don’t worry, it’s not a h*nt*i series. You won’t find any b**bs.

Proud proud index ... your clothes!

Gulp …

After a few bites she sews the clothes, using a lot of paperclips. Her bad mood (of Touma staring her naked body) vanishes quickly when Touma tells her, he have to school. Though he offers her the keys, she waves goodbye to leave him in safety. In the hallway Touma stumbles and breaks his cell phone. Sad Touma questions why he has such misfortune. Surprised Index responds, informing the power of his right hand will also erase any fortune and blessings.

Pondering on these lines Touma drifts off which saddens the ‘lolicon’ teacher. I mean the teacher’s body can be compared by an nine year old girl… sweet ofcourse. Touma’s class shares the same opinion and hates Touma of making her cry. His misfortune continues when he bumps upon the level-5-esper-girl on his way home he meted in introduction of this episode.

Still angry and the more when Touma calls her ‘Shocker’ she tells her name Misaka Mikoto. When she tells her to make their last challenge a tie, Touma waves it and tells her she may have the victory.

Furious Mikoto fires a striking beam and they argue about the cause of the black out. Mikoto thinks it’s a duel. Touma wonders why but he does not care less. If so, he rather sway off. She may have the victory, credits her, great bye. … It blazes Mikoto off, but at the end he let him go with just a big fuss.

Arrived at his dormitory Touma finds Index badly injured on the floor of his doorstep. Desperately he searches for clues of the assault. However he finds himself in a bad position when I finds the pursuer. In fact, the pursuer was waiting for him …

Plot

In a world full of espers and supernatural powers, magical powers are still out of question. However, soon our here Touma will discover the existence of magic. He is the who finds Index. Index, a little girl drooping on Touma’s balcony fence. This girl got a perfect memorization, which allows her to remember every single drop of rain that falls, any leaves on trees and all faces she sees.

This remarkable ability is misused by her society , the church. They forced her to learn 103,000 forbidden grimoirs. Grimoirs are forbidden books containing powerful spells.  At the end, the church burned all copies, making Index the last library to the forbidden grimoirs.

Remembering those 103,000 forbidden books makes her a potent target for all who seek power.

Index, however, is optimistic and has powerful will to survive. Realized she will destroy any lives she contacts with, she decides to almost life in seclusion.

When Touma discovers the fact he cannot accept her fate and starts to make a life with Index. Using his own rare ability to dismantle esper and magic powers, he will be her guardian. As he learns of her deceivement he is willing to put his life to risk and safe her. Will it be enough, to safe Index, or is there more?

First Impression *The first impression covers a bit of the first episode, don’t read if you don’t want to be spoiled*

In the first few minutes we find our hero running away from a mob screaming ’such misfortune’. It reminded me of Keichi from “Ah My Goddess!” a bit, who held such misfortune as well. At any case, the boy, Kamijou Touma, had found these bunch of guys harassing a girl. Actually he attempted to warn to boys to do not provoke hér, but they didn’t get the his hint and thinks he’s just a troublemaker.

Rushing through the traffic our pal gets until the bridge when he suddenly doesn’t hear any of his pursuers. Instead the harassed girl appears, straight back walking in a straight line to him. Furious of him being meddled with she’s did not come to thank him.

Then they have a slight conversation which ends up the girl channeling her power and uses a ‘railgun’. A shocking lighting beam strikes a feet ahead of Tomou. Wow, magic, was what I thought, but in this world it’s called ‘esper ability‘. Magic in the world of Tomou is completely nonsense until he meets Index.

The first episode I watched was on Veoh. I didn’t thought the anime was that great, but Square Enix never fails to surprise me. Later on I subscribed and an episode later I found myself a decent To Aru Majutsu no Index Fansub. I chose ‘Eclipse’, since their quality never lack. You probably need to download the CCCP (codec pack) or use vlc player instead.

Videos

I found some video sources for you. At first we always have the OP, ED and promo on youtube. As I mentioned before, I watched the first episode streaming on Veoh. Excellent quality, but you need a Veoh client to get the real quality . The web based version isn’t quite that great (but way better than youtube).

Music
You ought to watch the OP just for once, it’s great! I bet you fall in love with the OP theme as well, which is sung by Kawada Mami. Kawada Mami did so many anime songs, you should know her by now.

The opening scene and theme are excellent. I love the flashy face of Index, which gives the expression of mystery around her.

The ED on the other side is a total different approach. I did not find it really interested to mention. Instead the mysteries screens you know get clear screens.

Overal the music is a real background music. At the moment, I don’t find any bad or good things to say about.

Manga
Most anime derives from manga. The first volume of this manga is published on April 10, 2004. I did not read the manga ‘yet?’ but I read it follow up the manga quite well. The first minutes of the anime, running from the dirks, is literary a follow up, running along the fight on the bridge and the finding of Index. Some manga images are literary translated in the anime.

If you are looking for a decent Manga scanlator, I recommend Sakurahana, (see mangaupdates for more).

I did not find Index in my shops yet, but I eagerly await it’s arrival. It will be a great addition to my collection (as will the series)
